  • Windows 11 build 28000.1896 (KB5083806) arrives as the third (preview) cumulative update version 26H1.
  • This release includes fixes, improvements, and changes for specific computers.
  • Windows 11 26H1 will be exclusively availble on new devices with specific processors, and not for existing PCs.

Microsoft has made available the Windows 11 build 28000.1896 (KB5083806) as the May 2026 update (preview) for devices running version 26H1.

According to the changelog, the “2026-05 Preview Update (KB5083806) (28000.1896)” includes improvements for Narrator, Smart App Control, Accounts settings, File Explorer, and more.

It’s worth noting that Windows 11 26H1 is not a version for current devices. Microsoft has explicitly stated that version 26H1 is not an upgrade path for Windows 11 25H2 or earlier releases.

According to the company’s newly published Microsoft Health Dashboard page, version 26H1 is a hardware-optimized release designed to enable next-generation silicon developed in partnership with device manufacturers and silicon partners. This release will be available exclusively as a preinstalled experience on select new devices beginning in early 2026, with capabilities tailored specifically for those platforms.

Microsoft is referring to the new ARM64 PCs, starting with devices powered by the Snapdragon X2 Plus, Elite, and Extreme processors. If you own a computer running on Intel or AMD hardware, Windows 11 26H1 will never be offered to your system. If you want to keep up with every Windows release, including Insider Preview builds and cumulative updates, the Windows Build Tracker has the full timeline.

Important: Usually, Microsoft doesn’t release new features immediately. When a feature is announced as part of an update, it usually signals the start of a gradual rollout using the Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR) technology. Availability can vary based on region, hardware, and software configuration. For instance, some features take longer to reach users in Europe due to regulatory requirements.

What’s new on Windows 11 26H1 update KB5083806

Microsoft is currently rolling out these improvements and fixes as part of the April 2026 Security Update for Windows 11 26H1.

Narrator adds AI image descriptions

Narrator now delivers rich image descriptions across all Windows 11 devices by integrating directly with Copilot. You can press “Narrator key + Ctrl + D” to describe a focused image or “Narrator key + Ctrl + S” to describe the full screen.

When triggered, Copilot opens with the selected image, allowing you to refine the description using a custom prompt. The image is only shared after user confirmation. On Copilot+ PCs, descriptions are generated instantly on-device, with the option to request more detailed insights through Copilot.

Smart App Control can now be disabled without reinstalling

Windows 11 now lets you enable or disable Smart App Control (SAC) without a clean installation. The option is available under Windows Security > App & Browser Control > Smart App Control.

When enabled, SAC continues to block untrusted or potentially harmful applications.

Settings introduces Microsoft 365 upgrade option

The Accounts section in Settings gains new capabilities and visual updates. Microsoft 365 Family subscribers can now upgrade to a different plan directly from Settings > Accounts. If you prefer not to see upgrade suggestions, you can disable them by turning off Suggested content.

In addition, dialog boxes under Settings > Accounts > Other users have been redesigned with a modern appearance and now support dark mode. Availability depends on whether the device is connected to a work or school domain.

Pen settings gain new Copilot button customization

The Pen settings page now includes improved configuration for the pen tail button. A new option labeled “Same as Copilot key” allows the button to launch the same app assigned to the Copilot key, making it easier to align pen actions with system shortcuts.

Settings app gets redesigned About page

The Settings experience continues to evolve with a redesigned About page that presents device specifications in a more structured and intuitive layout. It also provides quicker navigation to related areas, including direct access to Storage settings.
