  • Windows 11 26H2 is expected later in 2026, but you can install preview versions now.
  • The update can be installed through the Windows Insider Program or via a bootable USB drive and an ISO file.

Windows 11 26H2 (2026 Update) isn’t expected to launch until later this year, likely in September or October. However, you can already install preview builds of the new version on compatible devices through the Windows Insider Program or by performing a clean installation using bootable USB media.

It’s important to note that version 26H2 shares the same platform and servicing foundation as version 25H2, meaning the two releases are virtually identical under the hood. As a result, many of the new features and improvements introduced during the early development of version 26H2 are expected to roll out to version 25H2 as well. However, joining the preview program gives you access to those changes before they become available more broadly.

As the official release approaches, Microsoft is expected to provide additional upgrade paths, including the ability to install version 26H2 directly through Windows Update. Since versions 25H2 and 26H2 share the same platform, devices already running version 25H2 will likely be able to upgrade using a small Enablement Package, allowing the new version to install quickly without requiring a full operating system upgrade.

In this guide, I’ll outline how to upgrade to Windows 11 26H2 using the latest preview of the operating system through the Windows Insider Program.

Important: It’s recommended to create a full backup of your computer in case you need to roll back in the event of an issue. You have been warned.

Pureinfotech’s Take

I don’t see a compelling reason for most people to rush into Windows 11 26H2 right now. Since version 26H2 shares the same platform as 25H2, the experience won’t be dramatically different, and many of the features Microsoft is testing are likely to arrive on both releases anyway.

That said, if you’re someone who likes testing new features early or needs to validate software and hardware against upcoming releases, installing the preview can make sense. In my experience, Microsoft’s development builds have become more stable over the years, but they’re still preview software, and I wouldn’t run them on a primary computer unless you’re comfortable dealing with occasional bugs, errors, and changes.

The good news is that the upgrade path should be straightforward once the final version arrives. Because the company is continuing its enablement package strategy, I expect the transition from 25H2 to 26H2 to feel more like a regular cumulative update than a traditional feature upgrade.

Are you planning to install Windows 11 26H2 early, or will you wait for the official release? Let me know in the comments.
