- Windows 11 build 28000.3086 is rolling out to version 26H1, bringing a large set of new features, improvements, and reliability fixes for the October 2026 update.
- Taskbar and Start menu get new positioning, sizing, and visibility controls, giving users more ways to customize these core parts of Windows 11.
- Windows Search gets a cleaner interface, clearer result categories, controls for web and Microsoft Store results, and automatic indexing for frequently used folders.

Microsoft has made Windows 11 build 28000.3086 (KB5124006) available as a preview for the October 2026 Security Update for devices running version 26H1. This update introduces new features and changes already available on Windows 11 25H2. The rollout will be available starting October 13, 2026, and the company usually starts the deployment at 1PM Eastern Time.
According to the changelog, build 28000.3086 for Windows 11 begins rolling out major Taskbar changes, including a new positioning option, and the Start menu gains a resize option and settings to manage section visibility.
Windows Search also gets a significant makeover, along with other changes. Microsoft is also rolling out the new Administrator Protection security feature, and you’ll find improvements for File Explorer, Windows Share, Task Manager, Windows Setup, Windows Update, and much more.

Windows 11 26H1 is not a version for current devices. Microsoft has explicitly stated that version 26H1 is not an upgrade path for Windows 11 25H2 or earlier releases.
According to the company’s newly published Microsoft Health Dashboard page, version 26H1 is a hardware-optimized release designed to enable next-generation silicon developed in partnership with device manufacturers and silicon partners. This release will be available exclusively as a preinstalled experience on select new devices beginning in early 2026, with capabilities tailored specifically for those platforms.
Microsoft is referring to the new ARM64 PCs, starting with devices powered by the Snapdragon X2 Plus, Elite, and Extreme processors. If you own a computer running on Intel or AMD hardware, Windows 11 26H1 will never be offered to your system.

What’s new on Windows 11 26H1 build 28000.3086
Microsoft is gradually rolling out new features and improvements with Windows 11 build 28000.3086 for version 26H1. Since these changes are part of a controlled rollout, availability may vary depending on the device configuration.
Taskbar positions and sizing
Windows 11 is expanding Taskbar personalization with two new options.
You can now move the Taskbar to the top, left, or right side of the screen from Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors.
Taskbar tooltips, flyouts, and animations continue to work in these positions, while most customization options, including never combining taskbar icons, remain available.
Microsoft is also introducing a smaller Taskbar size option designed to free up more screen space, especially on smaller devices. The new setting reduces the Taskbar height and icon size while keeping elements like Start, Search, and the system tray properly scaled.
You can enable it from Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar size.
Some limitations remain. For example, touch gestures, the Search box, and Ask Copilot support for alternate Taskbar positions are still in development. Auto-hidden and touch-optimized taskbars are not supported yet, and the smaller taskbar option currently works only when the Taskbar is positioned at the top or bottom of the screen.
Start menu resize option
Microsoft is adding new size options for the Start menu on Windows 11, allowing users to choose between “Small,” “Large,” and “Automatic” layouts. The new settings make it easier to customize how much content appears on screen.
Build 26220.8925 also renames the “Recommended” section to “Recent” across the Start menu and Settings app. In addition, users can now independently show or hide the “Pinned,” “Recent,” and “All” sections.
Other changes include the option to hide the account name and profile picture in Start, and a redesigned Settings page with new customization controls.
Windows Search improvements
Windows Search is getting a useful cleanup that makes results easier to understand before you click anything. The home interface has been simplified to reduce clutter and make recent searches easier to revisit, while results now more clearly identify whether they come from an app, setting, file, web, or Microsoft Store.
Microsoft is also giving users more control over what Search shows. A new option under Settings > Privacy & security > Search lets you decide whether web results and Microsoft Store suggestions appear alongside local results.
The operating system will also automatically index your most-used folders so their files appear faster in future searches. You can control this behavior under Settings > Privacy & security > Search > Automatically find additional relevant locations.
File Explorer improvements
Microsoft is making File Explorer feel snappier in this build, starting with a faster and more responsive “Home” experience. The “Recommended” section is also getting touch scrolling, so you can swipe through the file carousel more naturally instead of relying on traditional controls.
General design changes
Windows 11 is getting a more consistent look for progress indicators. The updated design now appears during startup, sign-in, restart, shutdown, and update installation, giving these routine moments a more modern feel.
Windows Share new recommendation option
Windows Share is becoming more useful for work and school accounts, letting users discover and install relevant apps directly from the share window.
You can control the experience under Settings > System > Share by turning “Show suggested apps in share surfaces” on or off.
Administrator protection new feature
Microsoft is beginning to roll out Administrator protection, a feature designed to reduce exposure from free-floating administrator rights. It lets administrators perform tasks using just-in-time privileges while adding profile separation to harden Windows against elevation-of-privilege attacks.
The feature is not a formal security boundary and is turned off by default. Organizations can enable it through OMA-URI in Microsoft Intune or Group Policy.
Multiple desktops improvements
Switching between virtual desktops should now feel smoother and more responsive, making it easier to move between different desktop environments.
Display and graphics changes
Microsoft is improving the reliability of navigating to and interacting with Settings > System > Display. The update also improves how it preserves previous brightness settings after “Energy saver” turns off, so your display settings are less likely to change unexpectedly.
Task Manager improvements
Task Manager gets a reliability improvement for displaying app history information, helping ensure those details appear correctly when you need them.
Windows Setup changes
Windows Setup gets a small but welcome usability improvement when selecting a secondary keyboard. It’s now easier to skip this step when you don’t need an additional keyboard layout.
The Get Started app is also being expanded with new App install, Site pinning, and Theme pages, giving users more ways to personalize their devices and discover new features.
Windows Update new feature
Windows Update is getting smarter about sleep behavior. If you manually put a computer to sleep, it’ll return to sleep after completing an update, even when automatic sleep is configured to “Never.”
App update changes
Participating apps can now coordinate their updates with Windows Update. Supported apps can use this integration for improved scheduling and a more streamlined update experience through the Windows Update Orchestration Platform (UOP).
Microsoft Store changes
The Microsoft Store is gaining support for in-app purchases in packaged WinUI 3 apps that require elevation. This gives developers a way to offer purchases through Microsoft’s integrated commerce platform.
Windows Autopilot device preparation
Device association for Windows Autopilot device preparation is now generally available. The feature helps organizations identify trusted devices before enrollment, allowing them to apply device-targeted policies, automatically enroll corporate devices, and customize additional parts of the out-of-box experience.
Microsoft Execution Containers
Windows 11 is introducing Process Isolation for Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC), a lightweight boundary designed for responsive workloads such as coding agents and model-generated code.
The technology uses the operating system containment capabilities to restrict access to resources such as files, networking, the user interface, and other operating system capabilities based on policy.
Agentic processes
The operating system is also adding preview support for tagging agentic processes. Authorized components can assign an opaque agent identifier to a process token, which the system protects and automatically passes to child processes.
When an agentic process authenticates through Web Account Manager (WAM), the service includes the agent identifier from the process token in the authentication request. Microsoft notes that the identifier format may change in future releases because this is still a preview capability.
Cryptography
Windows 11 is expanding its post-quantum cryptography support by allowing ML-KEM to be used as a standalone algorithm for TLS key exchange. This adds another option alongside the previously introduced hybrid groups.
Network improvements
Microsoft is also implementing improvements to better recover from VPN-related background issues that can cause processes to stop responding. The update also improves the output of the netsh wlan show wlanreport command for users running Windows in Japanese.
Input changes
Typing with the Japanese IME should be more reliable, with changes aimed at reducing potential hangs. Voice Typing also gets an improvement that helps its settings for automatic punctuation and the launcher persist properly.
Accessibility and localization
The Intelligent Carveout interface is getting accessibility and user experience improvements, along with better translations for users across supported languages and regions.
Other fixes
This update includes a broad set of reliability improvements and small changes across Windows 11:
- File History: Fixed an issue that could prevent File History from backing up or restoring files to an external drive or network location. Affected devices could incorrectly show a “Reconnect your drive” message even when a compatible backup drive was connected and working properly.
Windows 11 26H1 is dropping the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) utility starting in September 2026. WMIC is already removed by default from new Windows 11 26H1 installations and will no longer be available as a Feature on Demand (FoD).
This change affects only the WMIC utility. Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) remains supported.
Finally, Microsoft is currently tracking two known issues with this update. Some domain-joined devices may lose their secure trust relationship with an on-premises Active Directory domain, which could prevent interactive sign-in with valid domain credentials.
Also, USB Audio Class 1.0 devices may fail to start or produce audio, including Code 10 errors, missing output, or unresponsive volume and sound settings.
Windows 11 October 2026 Patch Tuesday – Manual installation process
Since there’s always a chance of problems during and after applying a quality update, it’s recommended to prepare your computer by creating a restore point and a full backup before proceeding with the installation.
To download and install this Windows 11 update, open the “Windows Update” settings, then turn on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle switch from the main “Windows Update” page, and click the “Check for Updates” button.
Why the August preview becomes the October update
Microsoft builds updates in stages, which can make the naming and release dates confusing. The changes for a specific month’s update typically begin appearing in the Release Preview channel during the previous month. The same update then moves to the Stable Channel as an optional non-security update, usually near the end of the month, before becoming the final security update on the following month’s Patch Tuesday.
For example, the changes previewed in August 2026 are part of the October 2026 update. Microsoft first tests them through the Release Preview Channel, then offers them as an optional update in the Stable Channel, and finally rolls them into the October 13 Patch Tuesday update. The final release includes the changes from those earlier stages, along with any additional fixes and security updates.
This means an update can appear in August without being the August update. In this case, the August Release Preview build is previewing what will become the October 2026 update.
