Windows 11 26H1 doesn’t get version 26H2, and here’s why

If you’re running Windows 11 26H1, don’t expect your computer to upgrade to Windows 11 26H2. Despite the similar version numbers, these two releases are based on different platforms and follow separate development and servicing paths.

Microsoft released Windows 11 26H2 on September 29, 2026, but the update is intended for devices running the existing Windows 11 platform used by versions 24H2 and 25H2. Windows 11 26H1 is a separate platform designed for a new generation of hardware.

This distinction is important because it means Windows 11 26H1 does not transition to Windows 11 26H2.

26H1 and 26H2 are different platforms

The version numbers make the situation confusing. Normally, you would expect a computer running an earlier release to move to the next version. However, the company is taking a different approach with version 26H1.

Windows 11 26H1 introduced a new platform for supported hardware. It’s not simply another release on top of the same platform used by Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2.

By comparison, Windows 11 26H2 continues Microsoft’s existing platform strategy. Versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same underlying platform and servicing architecture, with the company enabling features and changes for each release.

This also means the two versions have different upgrade paths. If you’re running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, you can move to version 26H2 as part of the same platform. Windows 11 26H1 follows a separate platform, so it does not upgrade to version 26H2.

If your computer is running 26H1, you aren’t missing the Windows 11 2026 update. Your device is simply following a different platform and upgrade path.

Why Microsoft created Windows 11 26H1

Windows 11 26H1 exists for a specific class of newer hardware. According to the software giant, version 26H1 is a hardware-optimized release designed to enable next-generation silicon developed in partnership with device manufacturers and silicon partners.

This release is only available as a preinstalled experience on select new devices, with capabilities tailored specifically for those platforms.

In this case, the “H1” and “H2” labels describe different release paths, not two stages of the same operating system version.

What happens to 26H1?

Currently, Windows 11 26H1 and 26H2 continue on their separate platform paths. However, Microsoft is expected to bring the platforms back together with Windows 11 27H2 in the second half of 2027. If that plan remains unchanged, 27H2 would provide a common destination for devices currently following the two different platform paths.

As a result, users on version 26H1 shouldn’t need to install version 26H2 manually or try to force the install through Windows Update.

If your device is eligible for Windows 11 26H1, it’ll continue receiving the updates intended for that platform. Devices that stay on the existing platform will receive 26H2 and its subsequent updates.

The bottom line

If you’re running version 26H1, seeing version 26H2 on other devices doesn’t mean your device is missing an update. Your device is simply following a different platform path.

The two platforms are expected to sync up again with Windows 11 27H2 in 2027.
