Microsoft is rolling out Windows 11 builds 26300.9711 and 26200.9711 (KB5127936) as the first non-security preview for the November 2026 Security Update in the Release Preview channel. This significant update brings a wave of fixes and Windows K2 improvements. The rollout will be available starting November 10, 2026, and the company usually starts deployment at 1 PM Eastern Time.

According to the official changelog, the “2026-10 Preview Update (KB5127936) (26300.9711)” introduces new features, customization options, accessibility improvements, and security enhancements. File Explorer gets a customizable right-click menu, improved search results, dark mode support in Folder Options, and faster navigation to user folders.

The update also improves the Settings app, Taskbar animations, Phone Link integration, and the gaming experience in Xbox mode.

The update expands accessibility features with new Magnifier controls for per-monitor zoom, contrast themes, and locked views, along with Narrator support for reading and navigating mathematical equations. Live Captions gains an option to exclude screen reader audio.

Other additions include Cloud rebuild for reinstalling Windows using files and drivers downloaded from Windows Update, improved Wi-Fi connectivity in the Windows Recovery Environment, and faster Microsoft Edge launches. Windows also gains adaptive hibernation improvements, expanded memory integrity protection, IPv6 CLAT support, and Unicode 17.0 text rendering.

The release also includes fixes for Remote Desktop connection failures and certificate policy configuration through Microsoft Intune, improved BitLocker pre-boot PIN handling, and a fix that could prevent users from enabling Smart App Control. Microsoft is rolling out the new features gradually, so availability may vary by device and market, while the fixes and other improvements are delivered more broadly through the normal rollout.

If you want to keep up with every Windows release, including Insider Preview builds and cumulative updates, the Windows Build Tracker has the full timeline.

Important: Usually, Microsoft doesn’t release new features immediately. When a feature is announced as part of an update, it usually signals the start of a gradual rollout using the Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR) technology. Availability can vary based on region, hardware, and software configuration. For instance, some features take longer to reach users in Europe due to regulatory requirements.

What’s new on Windows 11 26H2 and 25H2 update KB5127936

Microsoft is currently rolling out these improvements and fixes as part of the November 2026 Security Update for Windows 11 26H2 and version 25H2.

File Explorer customizable right-click menu

Windows 11 is getting a more customizable right-click menu that opens faster, reduces clutter, and gives you greater control over the commands and app extensions that appear when you right-click a file or folder.

You can select “Customize menu” at the bottom of the context menu to turn built-in commands like “Send to and Create shortcut” on or off, add commands such as “Print,” choose which app extensions appear in the main menu or a submenu, or hide the app extensions submenu entirely.

You can also display “Cut,” “Copy,” “Paste,” “Rename,” “Delete,” and “Share” as menu items instead of icons, and move “Properties” to the bottom. To explore additional options, hold down “Shift” while right-clicking the desktop. The default configuration remains available without any changes.

File Explorer search results are also easier to scan, with file names, locations, and dates displayed in a consistent layout. The address bar now supports the ~ character, allowing you to navigate directly to your user profile folder and its subfolders, such as ~\AppData.

Finally, the Folder Options dialog now supports dark mode, making the experience more consistent with the rest of Windows 11.

XBOX mode new Task View experience

Microsoft is introducing a refreshed Gaming Task View experience in XBOX mode, featuring a new navigation bar that provides quicker access to Exit to Desktop and Power Options while gaming.

Better privacy controls and Settings

The “Privacy & security” page in Settings is getting a more organized layout, grouping Camera, Microphone, and Location privacy controls while bringing usage information from linked pages directly onto the main page.

Microsoft is also expanding the “Device Info” card on the Settings Home page to more markets. Available to users signed in with a Microsoft account, the card provides a quick overview of key hardware specifications and usage, with additional details under Settings > System > About.

The update also introduces minor visual refinements to the temporary files section under Settings > System > Storage.

Phone Link lets you preview messages from the Start menu

Windows 11 now lets you hover over a recent message or notification in the Recent section of Start to preview its content without opening it.

If you prefer not to use this feature, you can manage the experience under Phone Link > Settings > Start menu personalization.

Taskbar previews and multi-monitor settings improvements

The operating system adds smoother animations for app window previews when you hover over icons on the Taskbar, making it easier to navigate open windows.

The update also improves how Taskbar settings for multiple monitors are preserved when you connect or disconnect displays, helping keep your preferred configuration intact.

Magnifier adds contrast themes and per-monitor zoom

Microsoft is making Magnifier more flexible with a new contrast theme toggle that can reduce screen glare while preserving the original colors in photos, videos, and charts. It applies a dark contrast theme by default, with other themes available under Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier. Color inversion remains a separate option.

Magnifier also supports per-monitor zoom, allowing each display to use its own magnification level while keeping the magnified view within that screen. The feature is enabled by default and requires displays to use “Extend” under Settings > System > Display.

To adjust magnification, move the pointer to a display and press “Windows key + Plus (+)” or “Windows key + Minus (-)”. Use “Ctrl + Alt” with the mouse wheel, or move the Magnifier toolbar to that display. You can also disable per-monitor zoom or adjust individual zoom levels through the toolbar or Magnifier settings.

For multi-monitor setups, a new viewport locking feature keeps the magnified view fixed on one display while you move the pointer to another, without making the locked display unresponsive. Point to a display and use the “Ctrl + Windows key + K” shortcut to lock or unlock its view. Use the “Windows key + Esc” shortcut to release all locked displays, or change the locking shortcut to “Ctrl + Alt + P” under Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier.

Live Captions gains control over screen reader audio

This update adds an “Include screen reader audio” setting to Live Captions, giving users more control over what appears in captions. The option is off by default, preventing Live Captions from transcribing audio from screen readers such as Narrator, JAWS, and NVDA and keeping captions focused on microphone and system audio.

To include screen reader audio in captions, enable the setting under Settings > Accessibility > Captions.

Narrator can now read and navigate math equations

Windows 11 improves accessibility with new Narrator support for reading and navigating mathematical equations, formulas, and scientific notation. The feature works in supported Microsoft 365 apps, including Word and PowerPoint, as well as web content in Microsoft Edge version 153.0.4234.32 or later and Google Chrome version 153.0.8010.18 or later, making mathematical content easier for people who are blind or have low vision to understand.

To start navigating an equation, use the “Narrator key + Alt + N” shortcut, then use the arrow keys to explore its individual parts. Press “Esc” to exit. Math reading supports English (United States and United Kingdom), Traditional Chinese, Finnish, German, and Spanish.

You can change the language and other preferences under Settings > Accessibility > Narrator > Math reading.

New Family Safety alerts

The operating system also updates Family Safety messaging to provide clearer feedback when age-based parental controls block an app, helping families better understand why access to an application is restricted.

WinRE can now reuse saved Wi-Fi networks

Windows 11 makes recovery easier by allowing the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to automatically reuse eligible Wi-Fi profiles saved on Windows 11, including supported certificate-based networks.

This lets a computer connect to the internet during recovery scenarios, such as Quick Machine Recovery or Cloud Rebuild, without requiring administrators to preconfigure Wi-Fi credentials in WinRE. The feature is enabled by default, but network administrators can disable it. Microsoft previously announced this capability last month, and it is now beginning to roll out.

Cloud Rebuild for easier recovery

The development team is also introducing Cloud Rebuild, a new recovery option that reinstalls the operating system using a Windows image and device drivers downloaded from Windows Update, even when the computer cannot start. Unlike traditional recovery methods, it doesn’t require a USB drive or a custom installation image.

Cloud Rebuild also adds drive sanitization, letting users remove files or securely erase data using the storage hardware’s erase capability before reinstalling Windows. This process is irreversible.

For businesses, network administrators can configure and launch Cloud Rebuild remotely through the Recovery CSP, using either the currently installed Windows build or a specified target build.

Windows 11 speeds up Microsoft Edge launches

Microsoft Edge is getting a faster, more consistent launch experience on Windows 11.

When you open a link or launch Edge from the Taskbar or Start menu while the browser is already running in the background, Windows now sends the request directly to the existing instance instead of starting an extra temporary process.

As a result, eliminating this step lets Edge respond faster, especially on busy computers running multiple tasks. Microsoft says this is the first step toward a broader operating system capability that other apps can adopt to speed up their own launches.

Microsoft expands policy-based app management

In organizations, network administrators can now use policies to manage supported built-in apps in multi-session environments.

The update extends this capability to Windows 11 Enterprise and Education devices, giving organizations more control over which inbox apps are available across multi-session deployments.

Modern Standby and battery life improvements

Windows 11 is refining its adaptive hibernation policy to resume computers from Modern Standby more quickly while protecting battery life when the charge runs low. The system will enter hibernation less often when the battery is above 80 percent and sooner when the charge drops below 10 percent, balancing faster access with power conservation when it matters most.

Memory integrity protection expansion

As part of this rollout, Microsoft is expanding memory integrity (HVCI) protection to more eligible devices.

This means that during updates, supported devices may have the feature enabled to strengthen security and prepare for advanced Windows security capabilities, while respecting existing choices made by users and network administrators.

Networking adds IPv6 CLAT support for Wi-Fi and Ethernet

Windows 11 now supports IPv6 CLAT on Wi-Fi and Ethernet interfaces, using client-side 464XLAT translation to let IPv4-only applications access IPv4 services on IPv6-only networks. This helps organizations move toward IPv6-only deployments without losing compatibility with older applications that still rely on IPv4.

By default, the operating system discovers the PREF64 prefix through Router Advertisements (RA), with DNS ipv4only.arpa available as a fallback. CLAT requires SLAAC-based IPv6 addressing and doesn’t currently support DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation or the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

Administrators can enable the feature by running the following command in a terminal or by using Group Policy under Network > TCPIP Settings > IPv6 Transition Technologies.

  • netsh interface clat set global permit=enabled pref64fromdns=enabled pref64fromra=enabled

Upcoming DPAPI prompt retirement

The operating system now warns users and apps before prompt-based Data Protection API (DPAPI) protection or unprotection operations and explains that this experience will be retired in April 2027.

Anyone relying on these prompts should stop creating new prompt-protected data, switch to a supported non-interactive protection method, and decrypt or migrate existing data before the deadline. DPAPI operations that don’t use the prompt-based flow are unaffected.

Windows Spotlight reliability improvements

This release includes underlying platform changes that make Windows Spotlight more reliable on the Lock Screen, helping it work more consistently.

Support for Unicode 17.0

In addition, the system now supports Unicode 17.0 text shaping, helping Windows 11 correctly display newly encoded characters and scripts.

The standard adds 4,803 characters, including four new scripts: Beria Erfe, Sidetic, Tai Yo, and Tolong Siki.

The update keeps Windows text support current and improves compatibility with languages and writing systems worldwide.

Other fixes

This update also rolls out several fixes and small improvements, including:

  • Remote Desktop: Fixes connection failures for non-admin users on devices with Administrator Protection enabled and resolves an issue configuring trusted RDP publisher certificate policies through Microsoft Intune.
  • BitLocker: Improves pre-boot PIN retry handling to prevent repeated submissions from triggering TPM lockout and recovery.
  • Smart App Control: Fixes an issue that could leave the option to re-enable Smart App Control grayed out in Windows Security.

What’s new on Windows 11 23H2 update (TBD)

The company has also released security fixes and improvements for Windows 11 23H2:

  • TBD

This version of the operating system won’t receive any new features, as it has reached end of support.

Windows 11 November 2026 Patch Tuesday – Manual installation process

Since there’s always a chance of problems during and after applying a quality update, it’s recommended to prepare your computer by creating a restore point and a full backup before proceeding with the installation.

To download and install this Windows 11 update, open the “Windows Update” settings, and from the Windows Insider Program settings, enroll the device in the Release Preview channel, and click the “Check for Updates” button from the main update settings page.

If your computer has issues after installing this package, follow these instructions to uninstall the November 2026 update. If you’re unable to uninstall the update, follow these steps to recover your device.

Why the October preview becomes the November update

Microsoft develops Windows updates in stages, which can make release dates and naming confusing. Changes for a monthly update typically appear in the Release Preview channel the month before the update’s final release. Microsoft then releases the changes as an optional, non-security update in the Stable Channel, usually near the end of that month, before including them in the following month’s Patch Tuesday update.

For example, the changes previewed in October 2026 are intended for the November 2026 update. Microsoft first tests them in the Release Preview channel, then makes them available as an optional update in the Stable Channel, and finally includes them in the November 10 Patch Tuesday update. The final release can also include additional fixes and security updates.

In other words, the month a feature appears in a preview does not necessarily match the month of its final release. The October preview is an early look at changes intended for the November update.

Pureinfotech’s Take

This update brings several practical improvements to Windows 11, particularly the customizable File Explorer menu, expanded accessibility controls, and better recovery options.

I also like that Microsoft is addressing smaller usability issues, such as preserving Taskbar settings across multiple monitors and making Edge launch more efficiently.

However, the gradual rollout means not everyone will see these changes immediately. I’ll be watching to see whether the company continues delivering this kind of practical refinement as part of its Windows K2 effort.
