- Windows 11 26H2 installs through a small enablement package on version 24H2 and 25H2.
- Older releases require an in-place upgrade or a clean installation.
- A clean install removes old files and settings, often improving performance and stability.
- The guide explains how to download the ISO, create a bootable USB, and install Windows 11 26H2 from scratch.
- Currently, this version of the operating system is available as an early preview.
Windows 11 26H2, also known as the “2026 Update,” is expected to become available during the second half of 2026. While this release introduces a new version refresh, the installation experience depends on the version of Windows currently running on your device and the method you choose to upgrade.
If you’re already using Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2, upgrading to version 26H2 doesn’t require reinstalling the operating system. These releases share the same core platform, allowing Microsoft to deliver the new version through a small enablement package through the Windows Update settings. The installation takes only a few minutes and behaves more like a monthly cumulative update than a traditional feature upgrade.
However, if your device is still running Windows 11 23H2 or an earlier release, you’ll need to perform an in-place upgrade. This process preserves your files, apps, and settings while replacing the operating system with version 26H2. Although it’s the officially supported upgrade path, systems with older drivers, legacy software, or years of accumulated configuration changes have a greater chance of encountering compatibility or performance issues.
For that reason, I generally recommend performing a clean installation whenever possible. A clean install erases the system drive and installs a fresh copy of Windows 11 26H2 from scratch. Besides eliminating leftover files and configuration clutter, it helps avoid upgrade-related problems and often restores performance, stability, and overall responsiveness on PCs that have been used for a long time.
Although Microsoft offers several ways to install Windows 11, creating a bootable USB flash drive remains the most reliable and flexible option. You can create the installation media using the official Media Creation Tool or third-party tools such as Rufus or Ventoy, depending on your preferred workflow.
In this guide, I’ll outline the steps to perform a clean installation of Windows 11 26H2 from a bootable USB flash drive on a new computer or an existing device, with or without an operating system already installed.

Clean install Windows 11 26H2 from USB
A clean installation is a three-step process that includes downloading the Windows 11 26H2 ISO file, creating a bootable USB drive, and then proceeding with setup.
Additionally, you must ensure the computer can start from a USB flash drive, which may require changing the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) settings on the motherboard. However, since firmware settings vary by device, refer to your manufacturer’s support website for more specific details.
Also, since the new version of the operating system is still in development, the official ISO file isn’t available. As a result, you’ll need to use a third-party solution, such as UUP Dump, to create a custom image based on the latest preview of version 26H2.
1. Download Windows 11 26H2 ISO file
To download the Windows 11 26H2 ISO file, follow these steps:
-
Open the UUP Dump on the 26H2 page to download the latest build for 26300.xxxx build series.
-
Select the “Windows 11, version 26H2” option to download the latest (x64) ISO file, for example, build 26300.8597 or any newer release.
Quick tip: If you have a Copilot+ PC or a device using an ARM processor, then download the “arm64” architecture. Also, the build number may be different, depending on when you’re reading this guide. As a result, pick the build with the higher number. -
Select the language for the installation in the “Language” setting.

Check the “Include updates (Windows converter only)” option.
Quick note: This step enables the script to integrate the updates, resulting in an ISO file version 26H2. -
Click the “Create download package” button to save the tool on your computer.
-
Open the zip folder with File Explorer.
-
Click the Extract all button.

-
Select the location where you want to extract the files.

Click the More info option.
-
Click the “Run anyway” button to begin the lengthy process.
-
Press the “R” key to run the script once, and then press Enter.
-
Press the 0 key when prompted to close the screen.
After completing the steps, you can use the ISO file to create a bootable USB drive.
If you plan to set up a virtual machine, you can mount the ISO file directly into the hypervisor to proceed with the installation. Otherwise, continue with the steps to create a bootable USB flash drive.

FAQs about clean installing Windows 11 26H2
Here’s a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and answers regarding the installation of this new version of the operating system.
When will Windows 11 26H2 be available to everyone?
Microsoft expects general availability in late September or early October 2026, with a phased rollout.
Will support for version 25H2 end immediately once I upgrade?
No. Support cycles overlap. Windows 11 25H2 remains supported until its lifecycle ends in October 2027. Upgrading to version 26H2 resets support for your edition until 2028.
What exactly is an enablement package in version 26H2?
It’s a minor update that enables dormant features already present in the version 25H2 codebase. You don’t need a full reinstallation. You just need to apply the enablement package and restart to switch versions.
Will all computers get the same features?
Not necessarily. Some features may require newer hardware (for example, Copilot+ PCs). Also, features in 26H2 are shared with 25H2, but their rollout may be gradual.
What’s the difference between Windows 11 26H2 and version 25H2?
Windows 11 26H2 and 25H2 share the same core file system, making the operating systems virtually identical.
Furthermore, Microsoft plans to continue releasing the same features and changes for both versions. However, at some point (when version 25H2 gets closer to the end of support), the company will start rolling out improvements only for version 26H2.
What happens if I’m on an older release (such as version 23H2 or Windows 10)?
If you’re on Windows 11 23H2 or Windows 10 22H2, you’ll need to upgrade to Windows 11 25H2 or Windows 10 22H2 first. Then, the upgrade option for version 26H2 will become available through the “Windows Update” settings.
Do I need to perform a clean installation of version 26H2 if my PC is on version 25H2?
No. You don’t need to reinstall the operating system. You only need to install the enablement package through the “Windows Update” settings to switch to the newer version.
Will the clean installation process delete my data?
Yes. A clean installation implies erasing everything on the computer to apply a fresh copy of the operating system. It’s recommended to create a full backup before proceeding.
Do I need to upgrade my PC to version 26H2?
It depends. If you’re already running version 25H2, you don’t necessarily have to upgrade immediately. You can apply the feature update at any time. However, you should not skip this version as it’ll renew the support for another 24 months.
How long does the clean installation process take?
The time it takes to perform a clean installation of Windows 11 can vary significantly. However, the core installation typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes.
Pureinfotech’s Take
I still think a clean installation is the best way to experience a new version of Windows 11, even if Microsoft has made upgrades much faster and more reliable over the years. In my experience, systems that have undergone multiple feature updates tend to accumulate small issues that are difficult to pinpoint, ranging from driver conflicts to leftover settings that affect performance. Starting with a fresh installation avoids many of those problems before they happen.
That said, I wouldn’t recommend wiping your computer just because version 26H2 is available. If you’re already on Windows 11 25H2, the enablement package is the practical choice since it’s quick, keeps everything intact, and delivers the same result. I reserve clean installs for new devices, major hardware upgrades, or computers that have been running the same installation for several years.
What do you think? Do you prefer upgrading Windows, or do you perform a clean installation with every new feature update? Let me know in the comments.
