Since Microsoft introduced Bing Chat AI, Google has struggled to make Bard AI a competitive product to the point that Google CEO Sundar Pichai had to publicly respond to criticism and promise new changes to improve the chatbot.

In an interview on the Hard Fork podcast at The New York Times (via TheVerge), Pichai said the company plans to upgrade its AI chatbot to the more capable PaLM models that will open Bard to more capabilities in the coming weeks.

Originally, the search giant introduced Bard with a lightweight AI model known as Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) that makes the chatbot less capable than others like Bing Chat and ChatGPT. The new upgrade will switch Bard to the Pathways Language Model (PaLM), a far more robust large-scale model that will unlock more features to improve reasoning, coding, math, and the ability to resolve more advanced problems.

According to the company, Bard came out with limited capabilities as a precaution within Google. Sundar Pichai also pointed out that he contacted Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin about the development. While he didn’t notice any problem that may affect the company’s core business, he received concerns from other people.

Furthermore, Google’s CEO also talked about concerns with AI from the point of view that the technology is moving faster than expected, and perhaps society is not ready, as many tech communities have been warning of the potential issues with AI, including misuse and the spread of misinformation.
