How to install PowerShell 7 on Windows 10

On Windows 10, PowerShell 7 is the next version of the Microsoft command-line shell and scripting language designed for advanced users and administrators to automate tasks and change settings.

PowerShell 7 is built on .NET Core 3.1, but it’s backward compatible with the modules for previous releases. The new version also ships with a bunch of fixes as well as new features, such as argument (UseWindowsPowerShell) to run commands using the legacy engine. How to install PowerShell on Windows 10

To install PowerShell 7, use these steps:

  1. Open PowerShell download page on GitHub.

  2. Under the Assets section, click the PowerShell-7.0.0-win-x64.msi or PowerShell-7.0.0-win-x86.msi depending on your Windows 10 installation.

    Quick tip: You can always determine the Windows 10 architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) on Settings > System > About.
  3. Save the file on the device.

  4. Double-click the downloaded file launch the PowerShell 7 installer.

  5. Click the Next button.

  6. (Optional) Select the installation folder.

  7. Click the Next button.

  8. Check the Add ‘Open here’ context menu to Explorer option (if applicable).

  9. (Optional) Select the settings you want to use with PowerShell 7.

  10. Click the Next button.

  11. Click the Install button.

  12. Click the Finish button.

Once you complete the steps, PowerShell version 7 will install on your device, and it’ll be available from the Start menu, and desktop and File Explorer right-click context menu.
