Microsoft is bringing the Chrome-based WebView 2 Runtime to its Edge browser on Windows 10. Although the runtime component isn’t new, it only was available for Windows 11, not 10.
In a nutshell, WebView 2 Runtime is a technology that allows developers to embed web content (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) into their apps natively and uses the Microsoft Edge engine to render the content inside the application.
Before the WebView 2 Runtime was available on Windows 10, developers who wanted to create apps that display web content also needed to package the runtime components in the application. Although it was an option, it added unnecessary extra steps.
Microsoft plans to deploy the WebView 2 Runtime to all Windows 10 devices running version 1803 and higher releases, so developers will no longer need to worry about packaging this technology with their apps.
The technology will only roll out for consumer devices, including Windows 10 Pro and Home. Devices that an organization manages won’t receive this update (yet).
Also, according to the company, the component won’t take a lot of space, which means that it shouldn’t be a concern for devices with limited storage.
