- Windows 11 26H2 uses an enablement package on 24H2 and 25H2, making the version switch less disruptive.
- Back up your PC, free up storage, and make sure Windows Update is working before installing version 26H2.
- Uninstall unnecessary apps and disconnect peripherals that could interfere with the upgrade process.
- Don’t force 26H2 if Windows Update isn’t offering it, as a compatibility safeguard may be preventing problems.
Windows 11 26H2 is Microsoft’s next annual feature update for the operating system expected to be released later in 2026. Unlike older feature updates, however, version 26H2 is designed to be a relatively low-disruption upgrade. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same servicing branch, allowing 26H2 to be delivered through a small enablement package rather than replacing the entire operating system.
This doesn’t mean the upgrade is guaranteed to be issue-free. Even when the actual version change is small, the operating system still has to work with thousands of different hardware configurations, drivers, applications, security products, and custom settings. A problem with the existing installation can also surface when Windows 11 applies the new version.
For that reason, I still recommend preparing your computer before installing Windows 11 26H2. A few minutes spent getting the system ready can save you from hours of troubleshooting later.
In this guide, I will share several tips, based on my experience working with Windows, that can help you avoid problems and errors when installing Windows 11 26H2.

1. Install Windows 11 26H2 through Windows Update
If your computer is already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, the recommended way to install version 26H2 is through Windows Update.
This is particularly important with this release because the company is delivering version 26H2 as an enablement package (eKB). A lot of the underlying components are already delivered through regular monthly updates, and the enablement package activates the new version. Microsoft says the process requires only a single restart.
In other words, upgrading from 24H2 or 25H2 to 26H2 should be considerably less disruptive than the traditional feature updates we’ve become accustomed to.
To check for the update, open Settings > Windows Update, turn on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle switch, and click the “Check for updates” button.

If Windows 11 26H2 is available for your computer, click the “Download and install” button.
I don’t recommend forcing the update immediately if Windows Update isn’t offering it. Microsoft can use compatibility safeguards to temporarily prevent an update from installing on devices where a known hardware, driver, application, or configuration issue could cause problems.
If your computer doesn’t receive 26H2 right away, that doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong with Windows Update. It may simply mean the update hasn’t been offered to your particular configuration yet.
Microsoft’s Windows release health dashboard is also worth checking before forcing an installation because it provides information about known issues and safeguards affecting Windows releases.
2. Create full backup of your computer
Before installing any major Windows update, I recommend creating a backup.

Yes, Windows 11 26H2 should be much less disruptive than a traditional feature update if you’re already running 24H2 or 25H2. However, that doesn’t eliminate the possibility of something going wrong.
A failed update, corrupted system files, an incompatible driver, or an unexpected configuration problem could leave the computer unable to start correctly.
If you are preparing a computer for the upgrade, create a full backup of Windows 11 to give yourself a recovery option if something goes wrong.
At the very least, back up your important documents, pictures, videos, and other personal files to an external drive or cloud storage.
I consider this one of the most important steps in the entire process. You should never start an operating system upgrade without having a copy of your important data somewhere else.
3. Prevent storage problems during Windows 11 26H2 upgrade
Storage problems are less likely to be dramatic with Windows 11 26H2 because the update is delivered through an enablement package on supported 24H2 and 25H2 installations. However, the operating system still needs free space to download updates, stage files, create temporary data, and complete servicing operations.

Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements specify at least 64GB of storage for the operating system. This is a minimum requirement, not a recommendation for how much free space you should have before an upgrade.
Before installing version 26H2, open the “Storage” settings and check how much free space is available on the system drive.
If you’re running low, use the “Cleanup recommendations” page or free up space on Windows 11 by removing temporary files, previous installations, large downloads, and other unnecessary data.
I especially recommend checking the “Downloads” folder. It’s surprisingly easy to accumulate several gigabytes of installers, ISOs, videos, and other files without realizing it. However, make sure the folder doesn’t contain any important data before cleaning it.
If you have very little free space, address it before starting the upgrade rather than hoping the operating system will figure it out for you.
Some storage errors that may still appear during the upgrade process include:
- 0x80070070 – 0x50011
- 0x80070070 – 0x50012
- 0x80070070 – 0x60000
Storage issues are more likely during an in-place upgrade from an older version of Windows 11, such as version 23H2, or Windows 10. If you’re using version 24H2 or 25H2, the device is unlikely to encounter these types of issues.
4. Fix Windows Update to download Windows 11 26H2
If Windows Update is already having problems, installing a new feature update is probably not the best time to ignore them.
A computer that cannot reliably download or install monthly updates can also have trouble processing the files required for 26H2.
If Windows Update is stuck, repeatedly fails, or displays unexplained errors, I recommend fixing the existing Windows Update feature first from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
If that doesn’t resolve the problem, you can reset the Windows Update components to fix Windows Update problems.
I would also make sure the computer is fully updated before attempting to install version 26H2. Since version 26H2 relies on the shared servicing branch used by 24H2 and 25H2, keeping the existing installation current can help ensure that the required components are already present.
5. Remove blocks to download Windows 11 26H2
Sometimes Windows Update isn’t offering a feature update because something on the computer is preventing the download. One of the simplest examples is a metered connection.
If your Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection is configured as metered, Windows 11 can restrict certain downloads to reduce data usage.
To check this setting, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi or Ethernet, select your connected network, and turn off the “Metered connection” toggle switch.

You should also check whether an organization has configured Windows Update policies on the computer. Managed devices can have update controls that intentionally prevent feature updates from being offered. However, I don’t recommend blindly removing every Windows Update policy simply because 26H2 isn’t appearing.
A safeguard hold is different from a broken update system. If Microsoft is intentionally blocking the update because of a known compatibility problem, forcing it can turn a simple delay into a much bigger problem.
6. Uninstall non-essential apps to prevent problems
Third-party software is another common source of Windows upgrade problems.
Security applications, system utilities, hardware-management software, storage tools, customization programs, and applications designed for older versions of the operating system can sometimes interfere with an upgrade.
Before installing Windows 11 26H2, review Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If you have applications you no longer use, this is a good opportunity to uninstall them by clicking the three-dot menu next to the application, selecting “Uninstall,” and following the instructions.

I would pay particular attention to third-party antivirus products, system-cleaning utilities, aggressive customization tools, and software that installs low-level drivers.
You don’t need to turn your computer into a completely clean installation before upgrading. The goal is simply to remove software that isn’t essential and could potentially interfere with the process.
If necessary, you can reinstall the application after Windows 11 26H2 is installed.
7. Disconnect non-essential peripherals to avoid problems
Before installing Windows 11 26H2, disconnect hardware you don’t need.
I recommend leaving only the essentials connected:
- Monitor.
- Keyboard.
- Mouse.
- Network connection.
Temporarily disconnect external hard drives, USB flash drives, cameras, printers, USB hubs, game controllers, capture devices, and other accessories.
You don’t necessarily need to disconnect every peripheral, but removing unnecessary hardware reduces the number of drivers and devices Windows has to manage during installation.
You can also temporarily disable Bluetooth devices in Settings > Bluetooth & devices by turning off Bluetooth.
Once the installation is complete and Windows 11 has restarted successfully, reconnect your devices one at a time.
This may seem like a small precaution, but when you’re troubleshooting an upgrade failure, fewer variables make the problem much easier to identify.
8. Fix Windows 11 26H2 upgrade errors
If Windows 11 26H2 fails to install, don’t immediately start changing random settings. First, write down the error code.
Windows installation errors often contain useful information about what went wrong. Searching for the exact code can help determine whether you’re dealing with a driver, application, storage, Windows Update, or compatibility problem.
For example, errors beginning with 0xC1900101:
- 0xC1900101 – 0x20004
- 0xC1900101 – 0x2000c
- 0xC1900101 – 0x20017
- 0xC1900101 – 0x30018
- 0xC1900101 – 0x3000D
- 0xC1900101 – 0x4000D
- 0xC1900101 – 0x40017
These are commonly associated with driver-related problems during upgrades.
Other errors can point toward insufficient storage, incompatible applications, corrupted update components, or other installation problems.
Error 0xC1900208 – 0x4000C indicates that an app is incompatible with the upgrade. 0x80070070 – 0x50011 (0x50012 or 0x60000) is another common error, typically indicating insufficient space to complete the update.
I recommend checking Microsoft’s Windows release health dashboard before attempting the installation again. Microsoft uses the dashboard to publish known issues, mitigations, resolutions, and safeguard information for Windows releases.
It’s also worth checking the manufacturer’s website for updated drivers and firmware, particularly for:
- Graphics cards.
- Chipsets.
- Storage controllers.
- Network adapters.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth hardware.
- Motherboards.
- Laptops with specialized hardware.
If the same error continues after updating drivers and repairing Windows Update, you may be dealing with a problem in the existing installation rather than with Windows 11 26H2 itself.
9. Upgrade to Windows 11 26H2 manually
If Windows Update isn’t working or you need to install Windows 11 26H2 manually, Microsoft provides alternative installation methods.
For compatible installations of Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, the enablement package is the best approach because it activates version 26H2 without requiring the traditional full operating system replacement.
You can also use the official Windows 11 installation media and ISO when a traditional in-place upgrade or clean installation is necessary.
If you’re troubleshooting a damaged installation, an in-place upgrade can help because it reinstalls Windows 11 while preserving your files, applications, and settings.
If the existing installation is severely damaged, however, a clean installation may be the better solution. In that situation, back up your files, create Windows 11 installation media, install the operating system, reinstall your applications, and restore your data.
I would treat a manual installation as the last step rather than the first.
If Windows Update isn’t offering 26H2, there’s usually a reason. Before bypassing that protection, check Microsoft’s release health information and make sure your hardware and software aren’t affected by a known compatibility issue.
If you upgrade to version 26H2 but the update causes problems, you can uninstall the feature update from Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and uninstall the update marked as Windows 11 version 26H2 or Windows 11 2026 Update.
If you upgrade from a previous version, such as Windows 10, you will need to use the “Recovery” settings.
Pureinfotech’s Take
I’ve become much more comfortable recommending feature updates than I was years ago. Windows 11 has matured, and Microsoft has gotten better at making these version changes less disruptive. The enablement package is a good example of that approach because it gives the company a relatively clean way to switch the system to a new version without rebuilding the operating system from scratch.
That doesn’t mean every device will have a smooth experience. The version change may be relatively simple, but the update process still happens in the background. If the operating system already has corrupted files, a problematic driver, incompatible software, or another underlying issue, 26H2 can expose it.
Based on my experience, I think users are less likely to run into serious problems with version 26H2 than they were with some of the older feature updates. However, I wouldn’t skip the basic preparation just because the upgrade is smaller. A backup, some free storage, a healthy Windows Update installation, and a quick check for compatibility issues are inexpensive insurance.
