Windows 11 26H2 may look like a typical annual feature update, but the upgrade experience depends entirely on the version currently installed on your computer. Some devices will install the update in just a few minutes, while others will need to download and install a full operating system upgrade.
I’ve been following Microsoft’s Windows servicing model since the company introduced enablement packages with Windows 10, and version 26H2 continues the same strategy. Rather than creating an entirely new operating system, Microsoft is building this release on the same platform introduced with version 24H2 and carried forward in version 25H2.
Why some PCs upgrade faster than others
If your computer is already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, upgrading to version 26H2 is expected to be almost as quick as installing a monthly cumulative update.
That’s because the software giant plans to deliver version 26H2 as an Enablement Package (eKB). Instead of downloading and reinstalling Windows 11, the update simply activates features that are already present in the operating system (if applicable) and changes the version number from 24H2 or 25H2 to 26H2.
From my experience covering previous enablement package releases, these upgrades are typically much faster than traditional feature updates because Windows 11 isn’t replacing the core operating system. In many cases, the installation only requires a single restart.
Upgrading from Windows 11 23H2 or earlier
If your device is running Windows 11 23H2 or an older release, the process is different.
Since those versions don’t share the same servicing platform as 24H2, Windows Update must install a complete feature update. Although the installation takes longer than an enablement package, Windows Update is designed to offer the latest supported release directly.
One of the biggest misconceptions about version 26H2 is that users will need to install version 24H2 first, then version 25H2, before finally upgrading to 26H2. That’s not how Windows Update works. Microsoft delivers the latest supported feature update to eligible devices, allowing them to move directly from version 23H2 to version 26H2 while keeping their apps, settings, and files.
Upgrading from Windows 10
The same principle applies to Windows 10. If your computer meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements, Windows Update will offer Windows 11 26H2 as a full operating system upgrade. There’s no need to install earlier Windows 11 releases first.
If your device doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements, Windows Update won’t offer the upgrade, and you’ll need to continue using Windows 10 or perform a clean installation on supported hardware.

Why Microsoft uses different upgrade methods
The different upgrade paths aren’t arbitrary. They’re based on the underlying platform running on your device.
For example, versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same codebase, allowing the company to enable the new release with a small update instead of replacing the operating system. Earlier Windows 11 releases and Windows 10 don’t include that platform, so they require a complete feature update.
Microsoft has successfully used this servicing model before. Windows 10 versions 1909, 20H2, 21H2, and 22H2 all shipped as enablement package releases, and the company adopted the same approach with Windows 11 starting with version 25H2. The goal is to reduce installation time, minimize compatibility issues, and simplify annual feature updates.
What this means for you
If you’re already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, version 26H2 should be quick. In practice, the experience is much closer to installing a monthly security update than performing a traditional operating system upgrade.

However, if you’re upgrading from Windows 10 or Windows 11 23H2, you should expect the installation to take longer because Windows has to perform a complete feature update while preserving your apps, files, and settings.
Based on the company’s servicing strategy over the past several years, version 26H2 is better viewed as a new support milestone than a major operating system release. The biggest change for most users isn’t the installation process or the feature set. It’s the extended support lifecycle that comes with moving to the latest version of Windows 11.
However, Microsoft will continue releasing new features and improvements through monthly cumulative updates, which will also be considered part of version 26H2.
