- The next feature update will carry the “Windows 11 2024 Update” marketing name.
- The official name was spotted on one of the Microsoft support pages and confirmed by a Program Manager.
Microsoft quietly confirmed “2024 Update” as the name for the next version of Windows 11 (version 24H2), and not surprisingly, the name follows the trends of previous feature updates. For example, version 23H2 was called “2023 Update,” and version 22H2 carried the “2022 Update” marketing name.
The official name for the next feature update first appeared on the “Flight Hub” page that the company uses to track previews of the Windows Insider Program. Then, it was (indirectly) confirmed by Brandon LeBlanc (@brandonleblanc), the Senior Program Manager on the Windows Insider Program Team at Microsoft, in a reply to @XenoPanther on X.
Although we’re months away from the release of the “Windows 11 2024 Update,” Microsoft has already announced that it’s working on the feature update for Windows 11 that will focus primarily on integrating more AI capabilities as well as new features and visual changes.
You can even perform an in-place upgrade early or a clean installation to test some of the improvements the company is preparing for version 24H2 later in the year.
The Windows 11 2024 Update release date is set for the second half of 2024. Probably, at some point in October. One thing I know for sure is that Microsoft plans to complete the development in April. As part of the rollout, the feature update will first come to the new ARM-based devices sometime in June, but only with some core features and changes to ship the new devices.
Finally, the final version will become available in the Release Preview Channel before it becomes an optional install for devices in the Stable Channel, and then the “Windows 11 2024 Update” will become generally available.
Alongside version 24H2, Microsoft is also working on the “Moment 5” update (also known as the Windows 11 February 2024 update), a much more minor update coming on February 27, 2024. However, it does come with new additions and improvements. This will also be the last “Moment” update as the company is reverting to releasing one feature update yearly.
Originally, the software giant was supposed to release Windows 12 in 2024. However, due to branding fragmentation and slow adoption of the operating system, Microsoft decided to push another feature update for Windows 11. However, version 24H2 will be as big an update as Windows 12 could have been in 2024.
