On August 12, 2025, the software giant began the rollout of the latest Patch Tuesday update for every supported version of the operating system with new features and security fixes. However, soon after, a small number of users started experiencing issues trying to use the “Reset this PC” and “Fix problems using Windows Update” features from the “Recovery” settings. This problem also affected the RemoteWipe CSP feature.
Now, the company is quickly making available the Out-of-band update KB5066189 and KB5066188 to address the issue on affected devices.

Out-of-band (OOB) updates explained
Out-of-band updates are emergency patches released outside the regular monthly schedule. Microsoft issues them to address urgent problems (such as newly discovered security flaws or critical bugs) that can’t wait for the next Patch Tuesday.
These updates are cumulative, meaning they include all previous fixes (security and non-security) plus the new targeted resolution.
