On August 27, 2026, Microsoft released the first official preview of Windows 11 version 26H2 (2026 Update) to the Windows Insider Program’s Release Preview channel. The release is available as build 26300.9278 (KB5120998) and gives eligible Insiders an early look at this year’s annual feature update ahead of its general availability later this calendar year.
However, Windows 11 26H2 is not a traditional full operating system upgrade. Microsoft is delivering the release as an enablement package (eKB), meaning much of what defines the new version has already been delivered through previous monthly updates.
According to Microsoft’s official announcement, Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same servicing branch. They also share the new features and improvements delivered through Microsoft’s continuous innovation model. As a result, many of the features and improvements associated with Windows 11 26H2 may already be familiar because Microsoft has gradually introduced them through monthly updates.
Windows 11 26H2 is coming later this year
Windows 11 26H2 is the annual feature update that Microsoft is preparing for 2026. The company says the update will become generally available later this year, but it hasn’t provided a specific public release date.
The Release Preview release marks an important step toward the final rollout because the build is now available to Insiders for broader validation before Microsoft makes it available to the general public.
Windows Insiders currently enrolled in the Release Preview channel can install Windows 11 26H2 through Windows Update using Microsoft’s seeker experience (using the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option). If your PC meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements, you can open Settings > Windows Update and choose to download and install version 26H2.
Once installed, the computer will continue receiving new servicing updates through Windows Update using the normal monthly update process.
Microsoft also says that Windows 11 26H2 ISO files will become available through the Windows Insider ISO download page in the near future. However, you can download the ISO file now using this method.
Windows 11 26H2 is delivered as an enablement package
The most important technical detail about Windows 11 26H2 is how Microsoft is delivering it. Unlike traditional feature updates, version 26H2 will be delivered as an enablement package. This approach allows Microsoft to activate the new version on top of the servicing branch that Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 already share.
In practical terms, Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 use the same servicing branch and receive new features and enhancements through Microsoft’s continuous innovation process.
This also explains why Windows 11 26H2 may not feel like a dramatically different version when it arrives.
A lot of its improvements have already been introduced through monthly updates. Instead of waiting for the annual feature update to deliver a large collection of changes at once, Microsoft has been gradually introducing features throughout the year.
The 26H2 release therefore establishes the next annual version while continuing the same feature-delivery model Microsoft has been using through monthly updates.
Windows 11 26H2 does not introduce everything at once
One important point from Microsoft’s announcement is that Windows 11 26H2 should not be viewed as a single massive package containing every new feature.
The software giant says that the shared servicing branch means versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same new features and enhancements delivered through continuous innovation.
That’s why users may have already seen many of the improvements associated with Windows 11 26H2 arrive through monthly updates.
The version update is therefore more about moving the operating system to the new annual release while continuing Microsoft’s existing feature-delivery model.
This is a significant departure from how feature updates traditionally worked, when a new version often represented a much larger collection of changes delivered together.
Why Windows 11 26H2 matters
At first glance, the announcement may not look particularly exciting because Microsoft is emphasizing the servicing model rather than revealing a long list of new features.
However, that’s precisely what makes Windows 11 26H2 important.
Microsoft is continuing to move Windows toward a model in which new capabilities are introduced throughout the year instead of being held back for one large annual release.
With Windows 11 26H2, that approach becomes even more apparent. Microsoft can introduce features and improvements through monthly updates while using the annual feature update to establish the next supported version of Windows.
For users, that means the jump to 26H2 should be less about suddenly discovering an entirely different version of Windows and more about moving to the next stage of the platform.
Windows 11 24H2 reaches end of updates soon
The release of Windows 11 26H2 is also important for users who are still running Windows 11 24H2.
Microsoft says Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach the end of updates on October 13, 2026. Enterprise and Education editions will remain supported until October 12, 2027.
That makes the transition away from 24H2 particularly important for Home and Pro users as 26H2 approaches general availability.
Microsoft has not stated in this announcement when 25H2 will reach its end of support, so the support lifecycle should not be confused with a specific 26H2 support period based solely on this release.
For now, Windows 11 26H2 has reached the Release Preview stage, with general availability planned for later this year. The release confirms that Microsoft is continuing its enablement-package strategy while delivering new Windows experiences gradually through monthly updates.
