How to safely uninstall Windows 11 26H2

After you upgrade to Windows 11 26H2, you can uninstall the update and roll back to your previous version of Windows 11 without losing your personal files. This can be useful if version 26H2 introduces a bug, compatibility problem, driver issue, or other unexpected behavior, or if you simply want to stay on your current version a little longer.

The only caveat is that the method for uninstalling Windows 11 26H2 depends on how the new version was installed. If you upgraded from Windows 11 25H2 through Windows Update using the enablement package, you can roll back by removing the update from the “Windows Update” settings. However, if you installed version 26H2 using the Installation Assistant, an ISO file, or another upgrade method, or upgraded a device from Windows 10, you’ll need to use the “Recovery” settings instead.

If you performed a clean installation of Windows 11 26H2, you won’t be able to uninstall the version and return to the previous installation. In that case, you’ll need to perform a clean installation of the older version you want to use.

When using the recovery option, the system gives you a limited time to roll back before it removes the files required to return to the previous version. Once those files are deleted, you’ll need to perform a clean installation. After rolling back from Windows 11 26H2, you may also need to reinstall some apps and reconfigure settings that were changed after the upgrade.

Uninstall Windows 11 26H2 from Windows Update

If you upgraded to version 26H2 from Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2, you can use the Windows Update settings to remove the update.

To uninstall the Windows 11 26H2 update to roll back to the previous version, follow these steps:

1. Open Settings on Windows 11.

2. Click on Windows Update.

3. Click the Update history page.

   

4. Click the Uninstall updates setting under the “Related settings” section.

   

5. Click the Uninstall option for the “Feature Enablement for Windows (Ge) – KB5121794” update.

   

   Quick note: Once the new version is fully available, the update name may be slightly different.

6. Click the Uninstall button.

7. Restart the computer.

Once you complete the steps, the system will remove version 26H2 and roll back to Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2, whichever was the previous version.

Uninstall Windows 11 26H2 from Recovery settings

If you perform a direct upgrade to version 26H2 from version 24H2 or 25H2 using the “Installation Assistant” tool or any other in-place upgrade method, or you upgraded from Windows 10, you can use the “Recovery” settings to uninstall Windows 11 26H2 and roll back to the previous version of the operating system.

To uninstall Windows 11 26H2 from version 24H2, 23H2, or Windows 10, follow these steps:

1. Open Settings.

2. Click on System.

3. Click the Recovery page on the right side.

4. Click the Go back button under the “Recovery options” section.

   

5. Click the Next button.

6. Click the “No, thanks” button.

7. Click the Next button.

   

8. Click the Next button again.

   

9. Click the “Go back to earlier build” button to uninstall version 26H2.

   

After completing the steps, the Windows 11 26H2 update will be removed from your computer, reverting the system to the previous version while preserving your files, most settings, and apps.

If the recovery option shows the “this option is no longer available on this PC” message, you can still downgrade. However, you will need to perform a clean installation of Windows 11 and restore the files from a previous backup.

I always recommend keeping the rollback option in mind before moving to a new release of the operating system. Even when an upgrade goes smoothly on one device, another system can run into a driver, app, or hardware compatibility problem that isn’t obvious until after the installation.

For me, the important part here is knowing how 26H2 was installed. Microsoft has made the rollback process fairly straightforward, but the experience isn’t the same for everyone. If I were upgrading a computer I rely on, I’d back up my important files first and avoid waiting until there’s a serious problem to figure out how to get back.

I also wouldn’t install 26H2 without preparing first just because I know I can roll it back later. It’s more of a safety net. If the new version causes trouble, having a working path back to the previous installation can save a lot of time compared with starting over with a clean installation.
