  • Yes. You can sign up for the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program after official support ends on October 14, 2025.
  • ESU provides one year of critical and important security updates through October 13, 2026, for version 22H2 with the latest updates installed. However, this does not include new features or full technical support.

Windows 10 will officially reach the end of support on October 14, 2025, meaning Microsoft will no longer release free security updates for most users. If you’re still running Windows 10 and not ready to upgrade your computer, you may be worried about being left vulnerable. The good news is that Microsoft is offering the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, and “yes,” you can sign up even after support has ended, but there are a few caveats.

What is the Extended Security Updates program?

The ESU program is Microsoft’s way of extending the security of Windows 10 devices for a little longer. Using this program, your computer will continue to receive critical and important security updates for an extra year, through October 2026.

It’s important to note that this program doesn’t add new features or improvements. It only delivers security patches to protect your device from malware and vulnerabilities.

The program is technically a paid service, and it’s been primarily designed for organizations. However, home users can also pay for it or obtain it for free (with a catch), depending on the option they choose.

If you’re still not ready for Windows 11, the company allows you to enroll your device in the program through three different methods. For example, you can choose to back up your data to OneDrive with or without a Microsoft 365 subscription.

You can also redeem 1000 points if you have already signed up for the Microsoft Rewards program. If you have never used this program, you can always enroll, complete a few quests, and then redeem the necessary points.

Finally, you can pay $30 to enroll in the ESU program and continue receiving security updates for your Windows 10 computers for one more year.

Can I sign up for the ESU program after support has ended?

Yes. You don’t need to have enrolled before October 14, 2025. Microsoft is now allowing consumers to enroll in the Extended Security Updates program after the official support deadline has passed.

However, it’s recommended to enroll before the support ends to ensure immediate continuity of updates. If you decide to sign up for the program later on, you may put your computer at risk during the time the device misses the previous updates.

Also, waiting to enroll won’t extend the support. The program will begin on October 14, 2025, and it’ll end on October 13, 2025, regardless of when you sign up for the program.

When is the last day to sign up for the ESU program?

Currently, Microsoft hasn’t specified a deadline to sign up for the Windows 10 ESU program.

The enrollment option should now be available for most devices from the “Windows Update” settings page. However, the company has previously noted that it’s slowly rolling out the option, meaning that if you can’t find it, you may have to wait a little longer. This is why some users may be wondering when the last day to sign up is, but there’s no deadline at this time.

What are the enrollment requirements for my PC?

The Extended Security Updates program is available for computers running Windows 10 22H2 with the latest cumulative updates already applied.

You also need to be signed in with an administrator account that is linked to a Microsoft account, as the Extended Security Updates validation is associated with your Microsoft account.

If you’re using a local account, you’ll be prompted to sign in with your Microsoft account to proceed.

Do I need to enroll in the ESU program?

No, if you have a compatible device, you should upgrade to Windows 11. This offering is intended for those who require additional time to transition to the newer version of the operating system.

Can I upgrade to Windows 11 after enrolling in ESU?

Yes, you can upgrade to Windows 11 at any time while in the Extended Security Updates program.
