Microsoft confirms version 25H2 doesn’t bring new features to Windows 11

Windows 11 25H2 is now confirmed to be identical to 24H2, arriving as an enablement package with no new features.

  • Windows 11 25H2 is identical to version 24H2 and introduces no new features, as both versions share the same servicing branch. Therefore, 25H2 will arrive as an enablement package that only updates the version number.
  • The release primarily removes legacy tools, such as PowerShell 2.0 and WMIC, while extending security support for an additional two years.

Microsoft has officially announced the availability of Windows 11 25H2 (2025 Update) in the Release Preview Channel ahead of its expected rollout in September or October 2025. The company also confirmed that this new version will not introduce any new features or significant changes compared to Windows 11 24H2.

Why Windows 11 25H2 is identical to 24H2

The reason behind this decision is that Windows 11 24H2 and Windows 11 25H2 share the same file system and servicing branch, meaning both editions are functionally the same. As a result, any feature or improvement developed for 25H2 will be available for 24H2, at least for the time being. However, this may change in the future.

Since there are no real differences, Microsoft will deliver Windows 11 25H2 as an enablement package. This type of update installs like a regular monthly patch and only changes the version number from 24H2 to 25H2, while quietly enabling any enhancements in the background. For example, the new Group Policy option allows administrators to debloat the operating system for new user accounts.

What’s being removed in Windows 11 25H2

While no new exclusive features are being added, Microsoft has confirmed that some components will be removed in this release, including:

  • PowerShell 2.0
  • Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC)

These decisions are part of the company’s efforts to streamline Windows 11 and retire legacy tools.

Microsoft’s official statement

According to Microsoft:

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 use a shared servicing branch. It also means that they also share the same new features and enhancements delivered through our continuous innovation efforts.

This highlights that future improvements will continue to land on both versions in parallel, regardless of the version number.

Insider testing and new features confusion

Over the past several months, Insiders have seen many new features and visual changes appear in preview builds, especially in the Dev Channel. At first, many assumed these were designed exclusively for Windows 11 25H2. However, Microsoft has also rolled out the same enhancements to the Beta Channel, which belongs to the Windows 11 24H2 development branch.

Additionally, some of these updates have already been included in cumulative updates for version 24H2 and are expected to be part of the 25H2 release as well.

Easier upgrade process with version 25H2

One advantage of this approach is that upgrading from 24H2 to 25H2 will be seamless. Since the update is delivered as an enablement package, there is no need for a full reinstallation process, which reduces downtime and the likelihood of post-upgrade issues.

For most users, the decision between staying on Windows 11 24H2 or switching to 25H2 will be straightforward. Since both versions are identical, the upgrade won’t change the user experience in any noticeable way, nor should it cause any issues.

One thing I wanted to point out is that this only applies to devices running the current version of the operating system. If your computer is still running version 23H2 or an older version, the upgrade process will require reinstallation.

Also, at some point, the company will release the Installation Assistant and the official ISO file, which will trigger a full reinstallation. As a result, if you’re using version 24H2, you should only use the “Windows Update” settings to switch versions.

Why you should still upgrade

Although Windows 11 25H2 doesn’t introduce new features, there is one important reason to install it. The support lifecycle. By upgrading, your device will receive an additional two years (until 2027) of security and maintenance updates, compared to staying on 24H2, which will lose support in 2026.

This ensures your system remains secure and compliant with Microsoft’s support policies.

How to get Windows 11 25H2 early

If you want early access, you can join the Release Preview Channel through the Windows Insider Program on a device already running Windows 11 24H2. Once enrolled, checking for updates will make the 25H2 upgrade available for download.

After completing the upgrade, you can opt out of the Insider Program to avoid future preview builds for a different version. When you turn on the option to leave the program, your computer will remain on the stable version of Windows 11 25H2 and continue to receive monthly updates until its support ends.

Alternatively, you can also download the Windows 11 25H2 ISO file to perform a clean install of the operating system. You can still install the new version of Windows 10, but you’ll first have to upgrade to version 24H2 before the option for 25H2 becomes available.
