Windows 11 build 22622.440 and 22621.440 out in the Beta Channel

Microsoft keeps adding features to Windows 11 22H2, and here are the new additions for builds 22622.440 and 22621.440.

  • Windows 11 22H2 gets two new updates, including builds 22622.440 and 22621.440.
  • Build 22622.440 comes with new features turned on.
  • Including Taskbar Overflow, Open With UI, and Dynamic Widgets content.
  • Build 22621.440 only includes fixes and Dynamic Widgets content.

As part of the Windows 11 22H2, the development team has released two new previews in the Beta Channel, including Windows 11 build 22622.440 (KB5015890) with new features turned on and build 22621.440 (KB5015890) with features turned off by default. However, both previews include the same fixes and improvements.

Build 22622.440 for Windows 11, according to the announcement, introduces the new Taskbar Overflow experience, the new “Open With” interface that follows the design language of Windows 11 and includes several fixes and improvements. In addition, for both build 22621.440 and 22622.440, you will find new Dynamic Widgets content on The taskbar.

Taskbar Overflow

Starting with this flight, build 22622.440 introduces the Taskbar Overflow feature (previously seen on build 25163), which has been designed to make it easier to switch and launch apps when you don’t have a lot of space in the Taskbar. The company explains that the Taskbar will automatically transition into this new Overflow mode when it reaches its maximum capacity.

While in the Overflow mode, Taskbar will offer an entry point to an overflow menu that allows viewing the apps in one space.

The overflow menu features many Taskbar behaviors, including support for pinned apps, jump lists, and an extended interface. After invoking overflow, the menu will quietly dismiss once you click outside of it or navigate to an application.

Dynamic Widgets content

This preview also introduces a new feature that allows the Taskbar to show dynamic widgets (previously seen on build 25136). In addition to the live content from the weather widget, you’ll also start to see sports, finance, and breaking news information.

The company also says that the Taskbar will return to showing you the weather if you don’t interact with the content update.

Open With dialog interface

The new “Open with” dialog box returns (previously seen on build 22567) in this flight with a new interface that aligns with the new design language. Microsoft has also simplified the experience by making it possible to update your default app with just one click.

Other improvements

This preview of Windows 11 also updates the U.S. English (EN-US) handwriting model to be faster and more accurate.

The Settings app now supports managing apps previously only supported from Control Panel. This includes the ability to uninstall apps that have inter-dependencies and repair and modify Win32 apps.

Build 22622.440 fixes

In addition to the new features, this release packs several fixes and improvements.

File Explorer

  • Fixed a memory leak when using tabs with File Explorer.
  • Fixed an issue where the Windows Narrator wasn’t reading out the titles of tabs as the focus moved through them.
  • Fixed an issue where the preview thumbnail for File Explorer in the taskbar, ALT + Tab, and Task View might show the title of an adjacent tab, not the currently selected one.
  • The add new tab button shouldn’t overlap with the minimize button in the title bar when using text scaling with many tabs open.
  • Fixed an issue leading to some Insiders experiencing explorer.exe crashes when docking and undocking monitors in Build 22622.436.

Suggested Actions

  • Fixed an issue that was leading to certain apps freezing after a copy action if Suggested Actions was enabled.
  • Fixed a high-hitting crash impacting Suggested Actions reliability.

In addition to these fixes, Microsoft is also pointing out a few known issues with File Explorer.
