Although Microsoft plans to roll out Windows 11 22H2 (build 22621) on September 20, the company is also expected to make some additional smaller updates known as “Moments” soon after the major release, and references from the first two have already been spotted.
According to a tweet from @thebookisclosed, previews of Windows 11 include the build 228xx range reference that could indicate previews of the first moment update, and the mention of 229xx could infer the range of builds for the second moment update.
To better understand these updates, we must step back and explain the upcoming changes to Windows releases. In the past, Microsoft made feature updates available twice a year, and then the company switched to only one every year. However, this schedule is expected to end with the rollout of version 22H2. After that, the company plans to release new versions every three years, similar to the schedule for older versions of the operating system, and “Moments” are those minor updates that will release between major releases.
As previously reported, “Moments” is a project that allows rolling out new features and visual changes at any time as cumulative updates without needing reinstallation. (Yes, these would technically be feature drops as you see today on other platforms like Android, and there could be up to four of them per year.)
Although it’s not yet official, the first “Moment” update is expected to roll out in October, only weeks after the release of version 22H2. It’s unclear what will be included, but earlier reports suggest that this first update will bring tabs and the redesigned navigation pane for File Explorer and Suggested Actions, as the company already scratched these features from the Windows 11 2022 Update. The second “Moment” update is expected to ship sometime in 2023, but similar to the first, it’s unclear what features will be included.
