- Taskbar Location Options adds Left, Top, Right, and Bottom shortcuts to the Windows 11 taskbar’s right-click menu.
- The free third-party utility lets users change the taskbar position without navigating through Settings.
- Installation requires trusting the app’s self-signed certificate and supports x64 and ARM64 systems running Windows 11 build 26300 or newer.
Windows 11 lets you move the Taskbar to the top or sides of the screen, but changing its position still requires opening Settings. If you frequently switch between layouts, “Taskbar Location Options” is a free third-party tool that makes the process much easier by adding four shortcuts directly to the Taskbar’s right-click menu.
The utility adds Left, Top, Right, and Bottom options to the context menu, letting you reposition the Taskbar in two clicks. You no longer need to open Settings and navigate through personalization options to change its location.
Move the Windows 11 Taskbar with two clicks
Taskbar Location Options integrates directly into the Windows 11 Taskbar’s context menu.

After installing the utility, right-click an empty area of the Taskbar to find the four new position options below Taskbar settings. Each option includes an icon representing its position on the screen. Select “Left” or “Right” to place the Taskbar vertically along either side of the display, or choose “Top” or “Bottom” to position it horizontally.
The change uses Windows’ existing Taskbar location setting, so you don’t have to restart the computer or manually edit the Registry. The tool is especially useful if you prefer keeping the Taskbar on the side of the screen to use vertical space better, or if you regularly switch between different desktop layouts.
Why this tool is useful
Microsoft restored the ability to move the Taskbar to the top, left, or right side of the screen on Windows 11 after removing this customization option from the original release. However, the company placed the controls inside Settings rather than restoring the simple drag-and-drop behavior available on Windows 10.
The company has also experimented with adding Taskbar positioning shortcuts directly to the right-click menu. A similar interface appeared in an Insider build, but the menu was hidden and had previously been used for internal testing. Its appearance doesn’t confirm that the Windows team plans to release it as a built-in feature.
Taskbar Location Options offers a practical alternative for users who want faster access to these controls today.
How Taskbar Location Options works
The utility writes the standard Taskbar location value to the Registry under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\TaskbarLocation
It doesn’t replace the Taskbar or modify unrelated settings. Instead, it adds the four menu entries that let you change the existing Taskbar location setting. The developer notes that the tool relies on internal Explorer behavior. A future system update could therefore change how the menu works or prevent its entries from appearing.
Install Taskbar Location Options on Windows 11
The installation process requires you to trust the application’s signing certificate before installing the utility. The current release uses a self-signed certificate, so the operating system must trust it before it can install the app.
Before installing the utility, make sure your computer meets these requirements:
- Windows 11 26H2 (build 26300 or newer).
- An x64 or ARM64 processor.
Step 1. Download and install the certificate
-
Right-click the downloaded script and select the Properties option.
-
Select the Unblock option under the “General” tab (if available).
-
Click the Apply button.
-
Click the OK button.
-
Right-click the script and select the “Run with PowerShell” option.
-
Continue with the on-screen directions to complete the process.
The script downloads the application’s certificate and adds it to the Local Machine Trusted People certificate store. Alternatively, you can download the certificate file directly and install it manually through the Windows Certificate Import Wizard. Select Local Machine as the store location and Trusted People as the destination store.
Step 2. Install the utility
Use the links below to download the tool installer for your computer’s processor architecture:
Double-click the downloaded App Installer file, then click “Install.” The utility installs the required components automatically and can update itself in the background.
The tool has its own interface, and when you close it, it minimizes to the System Tray. If you exit the app, you can always find it in the Start menu.
Step 3. Move the Taskbar from the context menu
After installation and running the tool, right-click an empty area of the Taskbar, and select one of the four new options:
- Left.
- Top.
- Right.
- Bottom.

Once you select an option, the system applies the position using its existing Taskbar functionality.
Should you use this tool?
Taskbar Location Options addresses a small but noticeable usability problem on Windows 11. Changing the Taskbar position through Settings works, but a dedicated context menu is more direct, especially for users who regularly change their desktop layout.
Where do you prefer to position the Windows 11 taskbar?

The main consideration is that the utility depends on how Windows Explorer handles the Taskbar internally. A future operating system update could break the menu, and the certificate installation requires additional trust beyond simply downloading and running a conventional application.
If you want quicker access to Taskbar positioning and are comfortable installing a third-party utility, consider Taskbar Location Options. Otherwise, you can continue using the built-in controls under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors.
