  • Windows 11 build 26100.4762 (KB5062660) releases for version 24H2 and 22631.5696 (KB5062663) rolls out for version 23H2 as the first preview of the August 2025 update through the Release Preview Channel.
  • The update for version 24H2 introduces new AI features for Recall, Click to Do, and the Settings app, along with system fixes, Quick Machine Recovery, and a redesigned Black Screen of Death.
  • The update for version 23H2 currently only includes some non-security fixes.

Microsoft is now rolling out Windows 11 builds 26100.4762 (KB5062660) and 22631.5696 (KB5062663) for versions 24H2 and 23H2, respectively, as the first previews that will become part of the Patch Tuesday update for August 2025. The updates are initially available through the Release Preview Channel and introduce several new features related to AI, recovery, and more, including non-security fixes.

According to the official notes, the update KB5062660 for version 24H2 introduces an option to export data and reset the Windows Recall feature for users in Europe. It rolls out new AI actions for Click to Do, including Practice in Reading Coach, Read with Immersive Reader, Draft with Copilot, and now supports actions through Microsoft Teams.

In the Settings app for Windows 11, Copilot+ PCs will now have access to the AI agent, and for non-AI PCs, this update will relocate the search box to the center of the app.

Microsoft also begins rolling out the Quick Machine Recovery feature and introduces changes to the Start menu, Snap, Windows Search, and Gamepad layout.

The update for Windows 11 24H2 also pushes fixes for File Explorer, Desktop, Notifications, and more.

As for the changes for Windows 11 23H2, the update KB5062663 only introduces fixes for the file system, network, printer, and stability issues.

For clarification, during the early stages of development, Microsoft does not disclose the final name of updates intended for the Stable Channel. While these updates are in preview, they are labeled as non-security updates. It’s only when they are officially released on Patch Tuesday that the company designates them with their final name, such as the “August 2025 Security Update.”

Important: Usually, the company doesn’t release new features immediately. A new feature advertised as part of an update marks only the beginning of a gradual rollout. It also depends on the geographical location, software, and hardware configuration. For example, due to European regulations, many features take longer to arrive.

What’s new on Windows 11 24H2 build 26100.4762 (KB5062660)

Microsoft is testing out these improvements and fixes as part of the August 2025 Security Update for Windows 11 24H2:

Recall new features

As part of this release, Windows 11 is introducing several additional enhancements for Windows Recall on Copilot+ PCs, including a new reset feature, updated snapshot storage settings, and a new option to export your Recall data.

Reset option for Recall

You can now reset the feature and all its data by navigating to Settings > Privacy & Security > Recall & Snapshots, and then clicking the “Reset Recall” button to delete all stored snapshots and reset settings with a single click.

In addition, the default storage duration for snapshots has changed from unlimited to 90 days. However, you can always set a different storage allocation for Windows Recall.

Data export with Recall

Starting with build 26100.4762, the company is rolling out an export feature for the European Economic Area (EEA), which will enable you to share your Windows Recall snapshots with third-party apps and websites.

As a result of this change, when you set up Windows Recall for the first time, the system will provide a unique Windows Recall export code to enable exporting snapshots using the feature. You can think of this as an encryption key, and since it’s a unique and private code, Microsoft does not store or recover lost export codes.

If you lose the Windows Recall export code, the only way to generate another one is by resetting the feature completely, which deletes all the snapshots and resets all the settings.

You can manage Recall exports through Settings > Privacy & Security > Recall & Snapshots > Advanced Settings, choosing from:

  • Export past snapshots: One-time export of snapshots from the last 7 days, 30 days, or all saved snapshots.
  • Export snapshots from now on: Continuous export of snapshots from the moment the setting is enabled.

If you want to share access, you’ll need to provide your export code and the path to the exported snapshots folder to third-party apps or websites.

Organizations can manage the Windows Recall exports using the “AllowRecallExport” policy or a Group Policy setting. By default, exporting is disabled on managed devices, and only individual users can initiate the process.

Click to Do new features

In August 2025, Click to Do introduces several new AI actions for reading, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Teams.

Reading options

After installing the update KB5062660, you’ll find two new features for Copilot+ PCs: “Practice in Reading Coach” and “Read with Immersive Reader.”

The “Practice in Reading Coach” option enables the system to provide feedback when reading a loud-selected text.

The “Read with Immersive Reader” option displays recognized text in a clutter-free interface, allowing you to focus on the reading experience, similar to the immersive reading experience in a web browser.

In addition, you can change the text size, spacing, font, or background theme. You can also have the text read out loud, use syllable breaks to split words, and highlight nouns, verbs, and adjectives to aid grammar learning. Furthermore, the picture dictionary option provides visual representations of unfamiliar words.

These features also require the installation of the Microsoft Reading Coach app.

Draft with Copilot in Word

Click to Do also brings a new “Draft with Copilot in Word” feature. This option allows you to turn any spark of inspiration into a complete draft instantly.

You only need to launch the Click to Do experience, select the text, right-click the selection, and choose the “Draft with Copilot in Word” option.

A Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription is required for this feature.

Microsoft Teams integration with Click to Do

In the Microsoft Teams integration, Click to Do is adding two new actions, including “Send a message with Teams” and “Schedule a meeting with Teams.”

Settings app new AI agent

Starting with build 26100.4762, the Settings app is officially getting a new AI agent that helps you find and change settings more quickly.

As part of this integration, the search box is relocated to the top of the Settings app. Using on-device AI, you can now use natural language to describe the problem or setting you want, and the feature will find and change the settings on your behalf with your permission.

If you want to test the feature, you can ask questions like “How do I control my PC by voice?” or “My mouse pointer is too small.”

The feature is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, but it’s initially available for Snapdragon processors, with support for AMD and Intel AI processors planned for the future.

Fixes for Settings

This release also resolves an issue where the Settings window could freeze and display only the accent color if left open while the lid was closed with “Do nothing” selected, and it fixes a bug that caused the app to hang when saving Wi-Fi credentials.

Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) feature

Quick Machine Recovery is a new feature that aims to reduce downtime due to boot failures by automatically detecting and resolving boot issues using the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and Windows Update.

When a critical failure occurs, the system automatically connects to the network and uploads diagnostic information to Microsoft, and the computer will receive targeted fixes.

The feature will be enabled by default for Windows 11 Home, but on Windows 11 Pro, network administrators will also be able to test and customize the feature.

You can enable and configure the “Quick Machine Recovery” tool from Settings > System > Recovery > Quick Machine Recovery, where you can choose automatic remediation searches and restart preferences.

Once the feature is enabled and a remediation is applied, you can confirm the fix in the Settings > Windows Update > Update history.

Start menu new changes

In this release, the Start menu isn’t gaining significant changes, but network administrators can now set Start menu pins to apply just once (on the user’s first sign-in). After that, users are free to customize their Start layout, and those changes will remain in effect. This is available through Group Policy and Configuration Service Provider (CSP) deployment.

Snap Layouts new changes

Microsoft is updating the Snap Layouts with inline descriptions to help you understand how to use the feature. For example, when opening the Snap Layouts menu from the maximize button, you will now notice the “Choose where to move this window” message along with the keyboard shortcut to invoke the feature without having to hover over the window button.

Additionally, when dragging an app to the top edge of the screen, Snap Layouts will display the “Drag a window here to arrange it on your screen” message, providing users with another hint on how to use the feature.

Search new settings page

As part of the Windows 11 24H2 August update, the Settings app consolidates the “Search permissions” and “Searching Windows” settings into a single page, now simply titled “Search.”

As part of this change, the company also had a design inconsistency with some previous settings that were still using the Windows 10-style design.

Gamepad-friendly touch keyboard

Windows 11 build 26100.4762 also introduces a new optimized keyboard layout for PIN sign-ins, supporting controller-based navigation.

Also, the Gamepad layout has been updated to improve handling for child keys, flyout menus, word suggestions, language switching, and settings.

Black Screen of Death (BSoD) rolls out

In August, Windows 11 will also be revamping the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with a new streamlined design, featuring a black screen instead of blue, aimed at improving user experience during system failures.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise since the company previously said the Black Screen of Death would arrive sometime in the summer of this year.

Alongside removing legacy elements, such as the QR code and the frown face kaomoji, the experience displays only essential technical information.

Other fixes and changes

The development team is also pushing several fixes and changes for the next monthly update.

  • File Explorer: Addressed interface and performance issues, including cut-off path menus, missing operation dialogs, degraded responsiveness with synced SharePoint sites, and unexpected behavior in File Explorer Home view.
  • Desktop: Fixed a bug where desktop-pinned app icons could break and display incorrectly after an app update.
