Windows 11 25H2 and version 24H2 share the same core file system, which means that they’re the same operating systems. This means that if you have a computer running version 24H2, you don’t have to perform an in-place upgrade or clean installation. In this case, you only need to install the enablement package to switch the version to 25H2.
The installation process of the MSU file is straightforward. You only need to double-click the file and continue with the on-screen directions.
On the other hand, if you have a computer running version 23H2 or another version, including Windows 10, then, in this case, you can download the ISO file to perform an upgrade or fresh installation of version 25H2.
If you’re downloading the ISO file, you can mount the image in File Explorer to launch the setup, or you can use third-party tools like Rufus to create a bootable USB media.
While the company hasn’t announced the release date of the new version, the October 2025 cumulative updates are already in preview, using the same KB number for both versions 24H2 and 25H2. This could indicate that Microsoft plans to officially release Windows 11 25H2 on October 14, 2025, during the Patch Tuesday rollout. However, also keep in mind that the company usually releases cumulative updates in the Stable Channel as optional installs before the official release date.
Currently, the only official way to test version 25H2 is by downloading the ISO file through the Release Preview Channel, available on the Windows Insider Program download page. Or by enrolling in the Release Preview Channel using the Windows Insider Program settings on Windows 11.
Also, since both versions of the operating system are identical, technically speaking, Windows 11 25H2 doesn’t introduce new features. However, this comprehensive guide includes all the recent features and changes that Microsoft has added to versions 24H2 and 25H2.
