Windows 11 26H2 is the next feature update for the operating system. While Microsoft officially supports the release only on devices that meet its hardware requirements, many perfectly functional devices remain excluded because they lack a compatible processor, TPM 2.0, or Secure Boot. On those computers, the update won’t appear through Windows Update, and Microsoft’s official installation tools (such as Media Creation Tool or Installation Assistant) are designed to prevent the upgrade.

Fortunately, those restrictions aren’t impossible to work around. By creating a custom USB installation media, you can bypass the hardware compatibility checks and install Windows 11 26H2 on unsupported devices.

Before you continue, it’s important to understand the trade-offs. Installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware places the device in an unsupported configuration. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the complete process of performing a clean installation of Windows 11 26H2 (using the latest preview) on unsupported hardware using a custom USB bootable media. Your processor must still support the POPCNT (Population Count) instruction, as Windows 11 cannot run without it.

The clean installation process involves downloading the ISO file and creating a custom USB bootable media before proceeding with the setup.

Also, you have to ensure the computer can boot from a USB flash drive, which may require adjusting the UEFI settings or accessing the boot menu. Since firmware settings vary by computer, please refer to your manufacturer’s support website for more specific details.

1. Download Windows 11 26H2 ISO file

To download the Windows 11 26H2 ISO file from Microsoft, follow these steps:

1. Open the Windows Insider page.

2. Sign in using your Microsoft account credentials (if applicable).

3. Select the “Experimental (Build 26300.xxxx) – 25H2” option under the “Select edition” menu.

   

   Quick note: Although the option shows up as version 25H2, builds in the 26300 series belong to version 26H2, as Microsoft originally announced. Also, note that the build number will be different depending on when you download the image.

4. Click the Confirm button.

5. Choose the product language.

6. Click the Confirm button.

7. Click the “64-bit Download” button.

   

Once you complete the steps, the final ISO for Windows 11 26H2 will be downloaded to your computer. You can continue with the instructions below to use the Rufus tool to create bootable USB media.

2. Create Windows 11 26H2 bootable media

To create a Windows 11 26H2 bootable media for unsupported hardware, connect a USB flash drive of at least 16GB and use these steps:

1. Open the Rufus website.

2. Click the link to download the latest version under the “Download” section.

3. Double-click the rufus.x.xx.exe file to launch the tool.

4. Select the USB flash drive from the drop-down menu under the “Device” section to create Windows 11 bootable media.

5. Click the Select button.

   

6. Select the Windows 11 26H2 ISO file.

7. Click the Open button.

8. Select the “Standard Windows 11 Installation” option under the “Image option” setting.

9. Select the GPT option under the “Partition scheme” section.

10. Choose the UEFI (non-CSM) option under the “Target system” section.

11. Specify a descriptive name for the bootable USB drive in the “Volume label” section—for example, “Windows 11 26H2 Setup”.

12. Use the default settings for the File system and Cluster size options.

13. Check the Quick format option.

14. Check the “Create extended label and icon files” option.

15. Click the Start button.

16. Check the “Remove requirement for 4GB+ RAM, Secure Boot and TPM 2.0” option to install version 26H2 on unsupported hardware.

    

17. Check the “Remove requirement for an online Microsoft account” option to bypass the internet and Microsoft account requirements and create a local account.

18. (Optional) Check the “Create a local account with username” option and specify an account name to create a local account automatically.

19. Check the “Disable BitLocker automatic device encryption” option to prevent the setup from enabling BitLocker during the installation.

20. Click the OK button.

After completing the steps, the tool will create a USB bootable media for unsupported hardware containing the Windows 11 26H2 installation files.

If you choose the option to create a local account automatically, the setup will create the account without a password. After the installation, it’s recommended that you create a password and PIN from the “Sign-in options” page.

3. Windows 11 26H2 unsupported PC install process

To perform a clean install of Windows 11 26H2 on unsupported hardware, follow these steps:

1. Start the PC with the Windows 11 26H2 USB flash drive.

2. Press any key to continue.

3. Choose the installation language and format.

   

4. Click the Next button.

5. Choose the keyboard and input method.

   

6. Click the Next button.

7. Select the “Install Windows 11” option.

   

8. Check the “I agree everything” option to confirm that this process will delete everything on the computer.

9. Click the “I don’t have a product key” option.

   

   Quick note: The computer will activate automatically after reinstallation. If this is a new computer, you must provide a product key. You can always provide the product key to activate later through the Settings app.

10. Select the edition of “Windows 11” your license key activates (if applicable).

    

11. Click the Next button.

12. Click the Accept button

13. Select each partition on the hard drive where you want to install Windows 11 26H2 and click the Delete button. (Usually, “Drive 0” is the drive that contains all the installation files.)

    

14. Select the hard drive (Drive 0 Unallocated Space) to install the operating system.

    

15. Click the Next button.

16. Click the Install button.

    

17. Choose your region setting on the first page of the out-of-the-box experience (OOBE) after the installation.

    

18. Click the Yes button.

19. Select your keyboard layout setting.

    

20. Click the Yes button.

21. Click the Skip button if you do not need to configure a second layout.

22. The computer will automatically connect to the network using an Ethernet connection. You must set up the connection manually on a wireless connection (a security key may be required).

23. (Optional) Confirm a name for the computer.

24. (Optional) Click “Show advanced options.”

    

25. Confirm the user folder name for your account.

    

26. Click the Next button.

27. Select the “Set up for personal use” option for Windows 11 Pro. This option is not available for the “Home” edition.

    

28. Click the Next button.

30. Confirm your Microsoft account email to create an account to log in to Windows 11 26H2.

    

31. Click the Next button.

32. Confirm your Microsoft account password.

33. Click the Next button.

34. Click the Create PIN button.

    

35. Create a new four-digit Windows Hello PIN.

37. Choose your privacy setting that best suits your preferences.

44. (Optional) On the “Let’s customize your experience” page, select one or more ways you plan to use the device to allow the operating system to suggest tools and service customization during this experience.

45. Continue with the screen directions if applicable.

Once you complete the steps, Windows 11 26H2 will finish the clean installation on the computer that doesn’t meet the minimum hardware requirements.

Microsoft periodically updates the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE). As a result, your experience may vary slightly depending on when you perform the installation. The wizard also varies by region, as the company has different ways to customize the operating system depending on your location.

I’ve always believed that hardware support shouldn’t be the only factor deciding whether a perfectly functional computer can continue receiving a modern operating system. I’ve installed Windows 11 on unsupported computers many times, and in most cases, the experience has been surprisingly reliable. That doesn’t mean I ignore the risks, though. Running an unsupported configuration is a compromise, and anyone choosing this route should understand that Microsoft can change the rules or introduce compatibility issues in future updates.

For me, a clean installation is still the best way to make this work. It removes years of accumulated apps, drivers, and settings that can cause problems after an upgrade, giving Windows 11 the best chance to run smoothly. If your computer still performs well and supports the POPCNT instruction, I think it could be worth trying before deciding it’s time to replace the hardware. Just make sure you have a complete backup first, because once you erase the drive, there’s no going back.
